This thing is probably showing up on your screen waaaaaaaaay bigger than the original drawing, which took up less than half a sheet of letter sized paper. I scan all my drawings at a high DPI and scale down as needed; in this case, I think a larger size helps to keep some of the details clean (even as it makes the mistakes worse).
