Luna Ascending by ABronyAccount Luna Ascending by ABronyAccount
Drawn for :iconmlp-atg-alumni:'s Week 87 theme: A pony on the rise; a pony ascending
Here's Luna, ascending from the Nightmare and its spell of jealousy that was her true prison for a thousand years. This is what I imagine happenin inside that blast of rainbows during the 2-parter premiere.
This one started out as much more stylized and less detail-oriented, but I have a tendency to keep throwing details at something the longer I work on it. And I was working on this one at least twice as long as for most of my pictures!
I've been posting WIPs at different steps along the process in my scrapbook if anyone would care to look at what I typically do to arrive at a finished piece.

Thought she was about to get eaten and become Nightmare Moon, would be a bit more clear if some of the Nightmare's teeth were falling out as well. Still, great piece!:D

Hmmm, that is an idea! I'll keep it in mind the next time I make something melting upwards.

Thanks for posting the different stages of completion.  As other people have already said, those are always interesting to look at.

No problem.
I've got another drawing waiting in the wings with a similar set of WIPs to go with it. Because it was a request, I'm going to give the person who asked for it a little time to decide if they're okay with me posting the pieces in my gallery or not.

It pretty cool of you to put the WIPs out there. I always interested in the creation process. And the details of the mouth is well done.

Thanks. To be honest I was just going into new territory and figured that if I mess this up, at least I'll have some pretty pencils to show people what it looked like before everything went all banana-shaped.

Yeah I know that feeling. This fear that I will ruin this nice pencil sketch with my noob inking ability.

Pffft, you're just saying that because of the inky blackness, stark white eye, amorphous jaw lined with jagged and random teeth, giant split tongue, and the fact that it took control of somebody and made them do things they wouldn't normally do.
In reality they're TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Nightmare doesn't need chocolate to live.

Thanks! I tend to be a "concept" guy more than an "execution" guy, but this one turned out pretty close to what I had in mind.

Luna's pose is really nice as well.

It might not be clear, but I was hoping the Nightmare thing would bring to mind the Nightmare Moon symbol of the "mare in the moon."
Anyway, this exercise has convinced me that I need to work more with blacks (possibly even *gasp* shading!) instead of just lines.

Yeah shading is fun. Symbolism for 'the nightmare' is also fun.

It works well enough as a line art.

It could be better. I should invest in a few tools for making cleaner line art anyways.

Could try for Adobe Illustrator or something.

'Adobe Illustrator CS 5 (Old Version): $599.00 to $625.00'
:iconapplejacknahplz:
Also, vectoring is an entirely different set of skills.

I don't know if Adobe is still doing it and if they cut it... But I managed to nab CS2 at least for free over on their site. I got it in a journal somewhere...

Nah, see, those aren't considered legit installs.
Adobe only made them available for people who already owned a license but were going to be screwed out of a re-install when they shut down the DRM servers for the old versions of the software. The ones being offered online had a serial number that didn't need to be activated remotely, but you're only supposed to use them if you were one of the people who had an old license to that version of the Adobe product already.
They were giving their out-of-luck customers a break, not giving away their old stuff for free to anybody who wanted it.
